چکیده

(R1 and R2, polypeptide chains.) The optimum pH for the reaction is 5. Increasing the temperature, time of reaction or concentration ofNaHSO3 does not cause more than about one-third of the disulphide-S to react [Elsworth & Phillips, 1941]. The reaction is slowly reversed when the bisulphited wool is rinsed with cold water, but it is possible to free the treated wool from uncombined NaHSO3 and to stop rinsing, when only small quantities of NaHS03, arising by the reversal of reaction (1), are removed from the wool. In previous investigations, this procedure was followed because the presence of large quantities of uncombined NaHSO3 in the treated, unrinsed wool would have interfered with the determination of SO2 combined in S-cysteinesulphonate groups. The extent of the reaction can however be determined by hydrolysing the bisulphited wool with 5N HCI [Elsworth & Phillips, 1938 a, b] when two thiol groups (see equations 1 and 2) are found in the hydrolysate for each disulphide group which reacts with NaHSO3.

The action of alkalis on wool: 1. The subdivision of the combined cystine into two fractions differing in their rate and mode of reaction with alkalis.

Only 50% ofthe disulphide-S ofwool will react with NaHSO3 to give thiol and S-cysteinesulphonate groups (Elsworth & Phillips, 1941; Middlebrook & Phillips, 1942). We have now shown that the disulphide-S ofwool can be subdivided into two halves differing in their reaction with alkalis; one-half tends to decompose according to reaction (1), whilst the other half tends to decompose according to re...

The disulphide-bond pattern of the heterodimeric disintegrin EMF-10, a potent and selective integrin alpha(5)beta(1) antagonist from Eristocophis macmahoni venom, was established by combination of amino-acid analysis, N-terminal sequencing and collision-induced dissociation by nanoelectrospray ionization quadrupole ion-trap MS of fragments isolated by reversed-phase HPLC after degradation of EM...

Oxidation of Wool : Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Wool

The purpose of this investigation was to provide quantitative data showing the effect of oxidizing agents on wool as a basis for studying all processes in which wool is exposed to oxidation reactions. The work reported in this paper deals only with the effect of hydrogen peroxide. Data are presented showing the effects on wool of varying the concentration, temperature, and pH of the hydrogen pe...

The reaction between wool and phenyl isocyanate.

During some studies on the reactivity of the cystine linkages in wool, it was necessary to find methods for blocking the various polar side chains with minimum degradation of the fibre as a whole, and without introducing any coloration due to the reagent used. Various workers have found that the amino groups of proteins react readily with i8ocyanates in aqueous solution at pH 8 and 00 (Hopkins ...
